teaching first grade at sandy hook elementary, and she loved every moment of it. her mom says vicky loved her students more than life. always referring to them as her kids, instead of her students. she wanted to be known as a good teacher but also as a fun teacher. her students loved her. many said she was their favorite teacher. on friday, vicki died a hero. after hearing gun shots, she herded her kids into the closet and shielded them from the gunman. >> she loved her kids. she talked about them all the time with such fondness and caring. she adored them. and i have no doubt in my mind she did everything she could to protect everyone of them. >> vicki was equally passionate about her family. she was known as queen victoria at home. the ringleader who organized christmas every year. her family said she loved the beach and the new york yankees. in her obituary they write she was an amazing daughter, cousin, sister, teacher and friend, and died protecting her kids. we couldn't be prouder of our hero. her beloved dog roxie still waits every day for vicki to come home from school. >> we will

to sandy hook elementary school, carrying a virtual arsenal. investigators say the gunman had hundreds of rounds of ammo with him, perhaps enough to kill every student at sandy hook elementary. the connecticut governor says when the gunman heard police arriving, he used one of those bullets on himself. massacre ending as it began, with violence and blood. we have team fox coverage with rick leventhal on today's first funerals for the victims and updates on the survivors. first, the fox report's chief correspondent jonathan hunt live at the fire house in newtown, connecticut. where does the investigation stand tonight? >> it's moving slowly, john, and it's moving methodically. there are, of course, two main crime scenes. the school itself where those 20 children, ages six and seven, and the six female staff members were all gunned down, so horrifically on friday. that crime scene is likely to remain one, according to the cops, for months to come. it will not be reopened as a school until all of the investigative work is done there, if it reopens as a school at all. the second crime scen

michael kehoe and captain joe rios arrived at sandy hook elementary within minutes of the call. >> we needed to break into the school to get in because the back doors are secured. >> reporter: how did you get it open? >> broke out the window. >> reporter: it was quiet, and the halls were empty. chief kehoe searched sandy hook elementary room by room. >> with the rooms locked, that means the teachers had done their job, locked their doors and hid their children from danger. so we went around the building to the front of the building. >> reporter: tell me about that. >> there was a very tragic observation on all parts because then you could see the carnage that was present. >> reporter: when you saw what was in that classroom, what went through your mind? >> i was devastated, absolutely devastated. i had no words. i felt a little bit of anger towards the person who had done this. >> reporter: did you think there was anyone there to save? >> no. >> reporter: as a first responder, how do you deal with that? >> well, you feel a sense of guilt that you weren't there quick enough to do that.

wrestling with so much heartbreak, all of the newtown schools except for sandy hook elementary will reopen. grief and the fears of returning students an additional concern. police officers will be at every single school and today the town will lay to rest, the grandmother of charlotte bacon says her 6-year-old granddaughter was a bundle of energy who loved dresses and a second, jessica rekos, loved horses, she wrote her own horse stories, excited about a pair of cowgirl boots she was expecting to get for christmas. now to get the latest on the school's reopening this morning, sara endo is here in the heart of newtown with more. >> reporter: they're starting to see a lot of school buses rolling by and in about an hour or two classes will be in session. they all may be anxious about school returning back to normalcy but this could be the first step to healing. step towards normalcy, for newton kids that means go back to school. >> we're a little bit worried because we know what we thought was a secure school had this happen to them. >> reporter: facing fear may be the first step to overcome

of normalcy today. classes resume at all newtown schools except for sandy hook elementary. the students return as that community says goodbye to more victims of friday's shooting at sandy hook. danielle lee is live in newtown, connecticut, with the latest. danielle, good morning. >> reporter: aaron, good morning. you may be able to make out a christmas tree over my shoulder. that's marking a memorial that's become the focal point of this little town. students may drive past it today as they head to class and return to routines for the first time since the shooting. it will be a reminder that some things will never be the same. yesterday we saw the first two funerals for the victims. there will be more today. there will be a viewing for the teacher vicky soto who died shielding her students. it's been incredible to see the mementos that people have been bringing to the memorials in tribute to these victims. police say the investigation continues. they have confirmed that the shooter went to shooting ranges with his mother who also was the rightful owner of those guns that he used in the crime.
for a teacher killed in the shooting is today not far from the sandy hook school. >> vicki soto died while protecting her students from gunman adam lanza. abc's t.j. winick is live with more on this. good morning, t.j. >> reporter: good morning, rob and sunny. authorities cannot say for certain whether sandy hook elementary will ever reopen. at a wake for sandy hook teacher victoria soto, hundreds stood in a line that wrapped around a funeral home in nearby stratford. >> vicki was the ringleader of the family, vibrant, full of life. >> reporter: it was a somber day for many parents here in connecticut, who sent their students back to school for the first time since friday. sandy hook elementary remains closed. >> i'll always be worried, but now it's very bad. >> reporter: at st. rosa lima catholic church, back-to-back funerals, as the service ends for 6-year-old james mattioli, the small white casket is placed back in the hearse. several minutes later, another tiny white casket, this one for jessica rekos, is carried inside the church. two other young shooting victims, charlotte bacon and
